Sprint recently honored the 2012 recipients of its Dallas/Ft. Worth Local Giving Program. Three area non-profit organizations were awarded grants totaling $50,000 as part of this signature community-support program. Sprint’s philanthropic focus includes youth development (including mentoring, leadership and academic achievement), arts and culture, and environmental stewardship.
Camp Fire Lone Star received the $25,000 Sprint Foundation grant for its Kids Club Youth Development Program. The funding will help support Kids Club, a free after-school and summer youth development program for over 1,100 low-income, disconnected elementary school children. Kids Club provides academic enrichment in reading and math, daily homework assistance, tutoring, and an array of educational programs. With help from Sprint, Camp Fire can continue to help these kids overcome the risks around them and ”light the fire within”.
Local nonprofits submitted grant proposals to Sprint and the three finalists were asked to record two 1-minute videos portraying how the funds would be used. Videos had to be created on a sprint phone and would be judged by Regional Sprint employees. Our friend and board member, Glen Day, Creative Director from Publicis Advertising, helped us design the concept. He and his team filmed at our Hebron Trails location in Carrollton showing kids in our Kids Club Program in action, as they worked through homework assignments and participated in activities designed to develop community and leadership skills in a fun, safe, and nurturing afterschool environment.
