The Job Readiness Program serves young adults, 18-21, who are unemployed or in menial jobs, not in school and facing multiple barriers to employment. They live in low-income areas in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Dallas County.
The immediate goal is to equip participants with the pre-employment skills essential to finding and maintaining productive employment. The ultimate goal is to put clients on a lifelong path to self-sufficiency that breaks the intergenerational cycle of poverty.
We are using a 10-session Job Readiness curriculum created by the Department of Housing and Urban Development appropriate for the development of pre-employment skills for the hard to place clients we serve. Training is conducted in small groups of no more than 10 participants. Clients are encouraged to dress in work attire and to arrive on time, just as they would on the job. The 10 sessions focus on Positive Attitudes & Behaviors, Adaptability and Responsibility and incorporate computer and interviewing skills into session activities. Session topics are:
Values and Personal Ethics – How values influence one’s approach to problem solving in the workplace.
Self Esteem – Taking Directions and Accepting Criticism –How to take direction as well as how to give and take constructive criticism.
Adaptability, Self-Motivation and Initiative –Self-motivation and taking initiative to develop skills on the job.
Recognizing Strengths and Working with Limitations – Participants identify skills and personality strengths through personal asset mapping and examine the connection between personal strengths and job-specific skills.
Overcoming Obstacles –Creative solutions to common employment obstacles, the 9 step decision making process and how to create resumes that highlight skills and assets.
Recognition and Respect for Diversity and Change – Participants explore diversity in the workplace and role play interviews.
Resource Management – Participants identify their priorities and resources available to them within the community.
Time Management – Including establishing and following a schedule.
Financial Management – How to build a strong credit history and develop and manage a household budget.
Post Test & Graduation – Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, are referred to our job placement program and are invited to mentor other youth in the next 10 week session.
When clients complete Job Readiness Training, they are enrolled into the Job Placement program where they will work with a Job Placement specialist in order to find a job.
